I have had very bad experiences with the Ames Fried Chicken Restaurant. I find that chicken is VERY HARD, most of the time, often it is BURNED, and when complaints are filed nothing is done. Well known food chains are often regulated in a much more professional way and their food is basically consistent, but with a restaurant of this type there is no regulation therefore workers, managers, and cooks can basically do what they want, making this restaurant a "RUSSIAN ROULET" TYPE RESTAURANT, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ames doesn't experience quite the clamor as a Lufkin institution as its across the street neighbor but when I'm in the mood for fried chicken I pass all the chains and go to this local favorite. You may have to wait for your chicken a little because they seem to turn over their stock pretty fast but that also tells you that it is good and fresh. And the rolls...they have the best rolls. If you are a bread eater go ahead and add an extra dozen rolls to your order. Since I was a small child I have loved their fried livers and gizzards but I realize they are an aquired taste but if you are in the mood everything is good. TAKE OUT ONLY!
